The Houston Grand Opera Guild sang Songs of Praise Honoring HGO’s Instruments of Success… Volunteers!

This year we recognized Jerry Bohannon as the Guild’s Volunteer of the Year. He has served as president of the Guild twice and volunteered thousands of hours in the Guild Boutique. Thanks to his expertise in marketing, the boutique has one of the finest selections of classical music in the city.

The Bravo Award was presented to Megan, HGO’s Properties Design Director, for her professional excellence with HGO. She provides the Guild’s education program and HGOco’s Create an Opera camp with props that spark students’ imagination as they create their own set, costumes, and props. At each Guild special event, Megan can be seen decorating with the rest of the volunteers as she lends her expertise. She is a critical instrument of our success.

As Volunteers of Distinction, we honored Andrew Bowen, Sylvia Carroll, Deirdre McDowell, and Elba Villarreal for their perfect notes of dedication, service, and time, as well as their leadership and inspiration in Guild events and programs. Working in the boutique, chairing special events, and providing genuine Texas hospitality for visiting and local artists, these honorees create an aria of success for our world-class opera company. The Guild’s Rising Stars, Rubena Buerger, Kris Taylor, and Betty Winters were recognized for their outstanding service. Our gracious corporate sponsor Community National Bank received the Crescendo Award for providing meeting space each month.

The Master of Ceremonies for the Awards Brunch was St. John Flynn, Director, Classical 91.7 and Host, The Front Row.

St.John joined KUHF as Programming Director for KUHF-Classical in March 2008, and now acts as Programming Director for Classical 91.7FM. In addition to his role as host and executive producer of The Front Row (Classical 91.7's daily arts magazine), he supervises the classical announcing staff and the audio engineers responsible for the station's concert recordings around town, including the Houston Symphony.

Brunch entertainment included a musical preview of the new season's operas performed by Houston Grand Opera Studio artists.

Proceeds from the Awards Brunch support the Guild's award-winning community opera education programs.
