Service Volunteers, assist at HGOco activities such as High School Night performances, Student Matinee performances, Opera to Go performances. With the Student Matinee and High School Night, they serve as guides meeting the buses and escorting entire classes or busloads to the areas of the Wortham Center where they are met by the house ushers. Additionally, the volunteers serve as sources of information and instruction for teachers, bus drivers, and students. With occasional Opera to Go performances, Guild volunteers serve as greeters and sources of information. After the performance the volunteers meet the students and their teachers and escort them to their buses. These volunteer opportunities are overseen by the HGO staff.
Of course the volunteers are invited to watch the production.
After Hurricane Harvey when HGO was in temporary residence at the George R. Brown, Guild volunteers served as guides and information sources at all performances, a service which received national recognition from Opera Volunteers International.
HGO costume and/or properties departments occasionally ask for help from the Guild volunteers. Service Volunteers in the past have sewn feathers on wings for the angels in It’s a Wonderful Life and assembled origami snow balls for The Snowy Day.
