The HGO Guild sponsors several social activities throughout the year. These events are open to the public and provide a glimpse into the world of opera in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. The two largest are the Fall Volunteer Awards Brunch and Spring Event.
Fall Volunteer Awards Brunch salutes volunteers and community supporters whose outstanding efforts contribute to achieving HGO Guild goals. This event has traditionally included a seated meal, light entertainment by HGO Studio artists, and award presentations to the honorees.
Planning efforts begin when the award winners and honorees are announced in May and continue through the summer months, culminating with an event in early Fall to welcome everyone back from summer vacation and kick off the opera season.

Spring Event is the most elaborate of the HGO Guild Special Events. The theme of the event often reflects an opera in the HGO Spring Repertory. This fun evening is a major source of funding for HGO Guild programs and has traditionally includes a seated meal and fundraising activities and a silent auction. The evening’s entertainment can take many forms, with some past events featuring casino games, fortune tellers, singers, a jazz trio, or a murder mystery theater.
The event may honor a long-time volunteer or supporter of the HGO Guild and often draws in people who have never attended an HGO performance. It is an excellent opportunity to provide them with a glimpse into the world of opera in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

HGO Guild Vice President, Special Events, oversees the planning of Fall Volunteer Awards Brunch and Spring Event. Vice President and event chairperson coordinate efforts and volunteers to bring these fabulous events to life. Volunteers play many roles with HGO Guild Special Events.
The Event Chair
– selects a venue for the event
– schedules the event to best fit the availability of the venue and event honorees
– decides on a theme for the event
– decides on a menu
– assembles a team to
– develop and mail the Host Committee letter
– promote the event
– design invitations and programs
– design event decorations
– track sales of event tickets and perform post-event reconciliation to verify payment information
Additionally, the Spring Event Chair has traditionally needed Silent Auction volunteers to
– plan and coordinate auction item donor solicitations
– obtain items for auction
– prepare items for auction display (i.e., combine items into packages, develop package descriptions,
set prices, create displays and bidder sheets)
– prepare auction item list and print auction catalog
– coordinate sales of items at Spring Event
All proceeds from the Spring Event support the nationally acclaimed education events and community programs of the HGO Guild. Volunteers often find their ‘day-job’ professional skills can be put to good use furthering the HGO Guild mission to educate and spread the word about the operatic art form.
