Each year the Metropolitan Opera conducts a multi-round competition to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers. The Houston District first round will be held at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.
This year, 24 singers will compete for cash prizes, and they have an opportunity to advance to the next round of regional auditions in New Orleans. If they win the regional competition, they then go on to compete in the Finals Concert at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
The auditions are open to the public and free of charge. The program begins at 10 a.m. and ends around 4 p.m. A cash bar featuring wine and beer is available in the Alice Pratt Brown lobby.
