HGO Guild was founded in 1956 and continues a long tradition of contributions to HGO, although it has changed during its history to meet the needs of HGO. Today’s HGO Guild volunteers come from all walks of life and are as diverse as Houston itself. An HGO Guild volunteer may be a young professional just starting out in the workforce or someone who has retired after many years of corporate service. A volunteer may hold a Ph.D. in advanced studies or be a ‘domestic engineer’ with years of on-the-job training.
HGO Guild has been the recipient of national awards for its programs that provide hospitality to visiting artists, its originality in fundraising through the Opera Boutique, and for its outstanding volunteers. Many programs created by HGO Guild have been replicated in other volunteer organizations.
Wortham Theater Center visitors recognize the Opera Boutique for the unique items sold before opera performances. This fundraising venture, a public face of HGO Guild, is staffed entirely by volunteers, who arrange the boutique, sell before the opera and during intermission, then store the fixtures and inventory for the next performance.
Educating future audiences and broadening the appeal of opera are pillars of the HGO Guild mission. The Opera Boutique provides funding for delivering educational programs such as Artist In Residence, Education Docents, and Opera Night Live. Other funds come from membership and special fundraising events developed by volunteers, such as our fall volunteer recognition brunch or spring gala.
HGO Guild volunteers contribute to meeting HGO objectives in many ways, such as welcoming visiting artists (Artist Hospitality and Studio Buddies) and helping with special projects at Wortham Theater Center. Volunteering offers opportunities to meet others who enjoy opera and to make new friends with whom to share your opera experiences.
If you are interested in volunteering for a few hours for a one-time project such as volunteering at the Theatre District Open House or student performances, we have a spot for you. Some volunteer opportunities require longer time commitments. Visit us at one of our community education events such as Opera Night Live. HGO Guild members will be happy to tell you about volunteer opportunities and welcome you as a friend.
The HGO Guild Board of Trustees is made up of the administrative officers of HGO Guild, the chairs of committees, and Life Trustees (people who have a distinguished record of volunteer service to HGO Guild).
The Board meets the second Tuesday of each month (except July). To find the next Board meeting Click Here
